INSTRUCTIONS

Week 1 (8/1/2020): Briefing about Group Project

Today, we were briefed about the group assignment and got into a group of 4. The topic our group got was "Electric". Hence, our group started to research different topics covered under this main topic. We thought of a few topics, such as:

1. Why don't birds on the powerline get electrocuted?
2. What if fossil fuel runs out?
3. Is solar energy our future?
4. Effects of electronic devices towards our health
5. What happens during electrocution?

After consultation with Mr. Shamsul, he advised us to work on the content research to ensure that there are sufficient data and information for the topic we would like to work on.

Week 1 (9/1/2020): Preliminary research and narrative

On the next day, we settled on the topic: "Why don't birds on the powerline get electrocuted?" as we have found sufficient information for it.

Here are our preliminary content research and narrative for our animation.

Week 2 (15/1/2020): Video tutorial 1

Mr. Shamsul tutored us on how to create an animation where the object can move along a path designed. Below is the video.

We were also assigned to work on another chart animation by utilizing data from the internet. Below is my attempt.

Week 2 (16/1/2020):

No class for today as Mr. Shamsul is absent.

Week 3 (22/1/2020): Moodboard presentation

Our group presented our mood board to the class today and the feedback was to remove the final section, which is "solutions to raptor electrocution" as it is unnecessary. Other than that, it's good to go. Below is our mood board.

Week 3 (23/1/2020): Storyboard

This week, we showed our storyboard to Mr. Shamsul for feedback. Below is our storyboard which consists of the frame, along with duration, sound effects, narrative, and transition. Below is our storyboard. Here is our final compilation of content research and narrative, together with our discussion for the storyboard.

Feedback.
1. The second keyframe in Fig. 1.5 - Instead of having a different background, the roasted chicken can be standing just like it was in the previous keyframe.

2. The duration of our video should be shortened, as it's 182.13 seconds in total (3.0355 minutes) without adding the duration of each transition.

3. We can try to cut down scenes from the explanation part of electricity and electrocution.

4. Statistics are displayed very clearly.

After a discussion with my teammates, we decided to omit one of the statistics as it's not as important as compared to the other two. As for the explanation of electricity and electrocution, we as a group decided to keep it as it is because each point is essential for a thorough understanding of our target audience.

Week 4 (29/1/2020): Video tutorial 2
I was absent from the Chinese New Year break. Nevertheless, my team continued working on our animatics.

I also learned to animate based on the tutorial posted on Google Classroom. Below is my attempt at tracking text effect.

Week 4 (30/1/2020): Animatics submission

Below is our animatics.

Feedback.
Mr. Shamsul: The voiceover level is not consistent. At 0:17, the sound suddenly increases, but it goes down at 0:19. Other than that it's okay. I believe that the visual of the raptor electrocuted will be much better and you'll add numbers of the graph.

Week 6 (12/2/2020): Assets

We proceed to list down the illustration assets needed before beginning our illustration. Below is the list of assets.

Below is the compilation of preliminary illustrations before proceeding to animate it.

Week 6 (12/2/2020): Animation KF1-8

With our illustrations, we came up with our initial attempt for the animation from keyframe 1 to keyframe 8.

Feedback
Mr. Shamsul provided a list of constructive criticisms which helped us to better improve our project, which is as listed below:

1. The graphics are not detailed enough. It looks very rough. Our graphics shouldn't be the same as the ones in our animatics.
2. Perspectives are inaccurate, e.g. the scale of the boy and the power cable.
3. We can play around with Typography for the title.
4. There's no need to have so many warning signs in keyframe 4.
5. Add sparks around the kite when it reaches the power cable in keyframe 2.
6. Remove the power cable and white lines on the road in keyframe 1.
7. The graphic style of pigeon is different in keyframe 4 and 5.

Overall, we should fix our graphics first before moving on to animating it.

Then, Kai Yi and I discussed the amendments that should be made and listed them on Google Doc. Here is the link to it.

Week 7: Refining our graphics

With the feedback given, we refined our graphics. Below are the new assets for our animation.

We spotted some assets and keyframes which we can improve on, hence we came up with the second version. Below is the final version.

Week 7&8: Animation

Upon getting the lecturer's approval on our graphics, we proceed to animate it. Below is the part which I am responsible for.

Fig. 1.17 My frames to animate

Then, I separated the layers and imported them to Adobe After Effects. Below is my process of animating my parts.

I also learnt how to animate the bouncy text in the following frame text by watching a Youtube tutorial.

Fig. 1.23 Animating my final frame

I spent two whole days animating my parts, and I am pretty grateful it went well. Below is the compilation of my animated parts.

After making sure it's good to go, I uploaded my files on Google Drive for my teammate, Kai Yi to do a final compilation of all the animations.

Fig. 1.24 Everyone's uploaded animation

Below is our final outcome of Final Project/ Project 2. I think I did better than what I expected myself to achieve, given the time constraint I had, as well as the need to juggle between different assignments. I have also learnt a lot and improved my Adobe After Effects skills vastly. Never would I ever expect me to enjoy animating so much. Here's to more improvements on After Effects in the future!

Enjoy our video!
