LECTURE
Week 1(13/04/2020)
Today, we started off our first lesson through Microsoft Teams with Dr Noorhayati and Dr Jinchi. Dr Noorhyati briefed us about this module with MIB and here are some takeaways I jotted down:
1. Online workshop about how to utilize library resources for our research will be carried out hence we must attend.
2. Our research topic needs to be related to our specialization as well as one of the following areas: design principle/ culture, social design, and future-making.
3. Pick an area of your interest as it will be carried forward to the end of our degree course.
4. Research must have a solid proposal, or not we won't have a strong foundation to proceed.
5. Find for strong secondary data, e.g. research papers on this topic, and not merely blog posts. Research materials must be academically recognized, written by scholars.
6. Change our profile pictures to our faces.
7. Utilize the progression sheet as a reflection on our progress.
8. Blog posts have 4 sections: Proposal, Critical Review, Research Implementation and Presentation.

The second session mentioned the following points:
1. The problem statement doesn't have to be a problem, it can be something you are curious and find out more about it. Examples: Graffiti art in Malaysia, the influence of culture in Malaysia's animation/character design.
2. Think about how can your role in researching this benefit the society, instead of merely an assignment. It has to be meaningful.
3. Think about this assignment as a big component which consists of 4 little components, and we are only working on the first one right now.

The third session started at 2pm to confirm our specializations. A few drafts were made on the name lists. The fourth session started at 3:40pm, where we discuss the notes and videos provided.

Also, remember yourself about your role in the design. Draw the line between creative design area and psychological area.

Week 2(20/04/2020)

Week 2 is about delving deeper into the research process where the problem statement of a research topic is being formulated.

Week 3(27/04/2020)

In week 3, we delved deeper into learning about formulating a research objective and questions through the introduction of the inductive approach and deductive approach.

PROPOSAL
Week 2 (20/04/2020)

I had a few ideas in mind and hence started to list them down accordingly. Out of the three areas, I knew that I wanted to delve deep into design culture/principles because I have a great interest in it. Below is my brainstormed ideas listed down in a Google Docs.

Fig. 1.9 Proposal 1

Feedback on my initial proposal through Microsoft Teams:
Clear about the research area to delve into. As for the difficulty in sourcing for scholar articles, try using keywords, e.g. character design and culture, while searching.

Feedback on my initial proposal through Google Docs:
- Hypothesis: revise, it is too broad.
- Research problem: Rephrase, as it did not highlight the cultural problem, and make the proposal sound like it is worth going through. Can try out to venture into the lack of cultural promotion put forward in character design.
- Rationale: Use third-party representation, e.g. the researcher, your name instead of “I”.
- The problem statement, research objectives and questions are alright.
- References: No blogs are allowed to be used.

Week 3 (27/04/2020)

With the feedback received, I have updated my research proposal. Below is my second attempt.

Fig. 1.10 Proposal 2

Feedback through Microsoft Teams:
1. Proactive in constructing a research proposal.
2. Final submission should be in Google Slides through Google Classroom.

Feedback through Google Docs:
Research Topic: - Replace “driving the rise of Asian animation” with “positioning” because “when you’ve positioned
it well, in the beginning, should aim to have in a rise in animation” - Positioning = strategizing. - Narrow down the research scope. Hypothesis: - It’s a good hypothesis, however, consider the time constraint. - “Can you prove that it’s no go in a short period of time?” Research problem: - “The word ‘positioning’ is more effective in the content” - “Asian context is huge, look at a smaller part instead of Asia” - “We will leave it towards Asian here” Rationale: - Clear description. Problem statement: - Confusion on the figure of the money. - The research scope needs to be revisited. - The importance of the relationship is actually obvious. - Holistic ideal: This is an aim for the later stage. - To explore and design will arise later in the initial research (Design Dissertation). Suggestion: - The researcher aims to study how effective to reveal a national identity of *a country*
This will then assist and position the animation for a future market. - To study what are the significant elements to be added in the study to bring one identity out. - However, it can be difficult for Malaysians because the three main ethnicities have to be
considered in my study as it’s about national identity. (e.g. Multi-ethnicity > hard to see
what’s the actual identity > Hard for Malaysia to identify the national identity) - e.g. In British, there’s a rise in the population of Indian and Pakistani, hence it causes a
change of national food from A and B. Bloom taxonomy > evaluation and synthesis should be the high level - Undergraduate studies should only be at the knowledge and comprehension level of Bloom’s
taxonomy (e.g. to tell, state, identify, tell, translate).

Week 4 (04/05/2020)

After today's tutorial on how to carry out APA style citation, I used Mendeley's web importer to import my references to my Mendeley desktop app. Below is my list of imported references:

Below is my third attempt:

Fig. 1.12 Proposal 3

Feedback on Research Proposal 3: - Research problem: “Has study shown this? If from your reading proof evidence to suggest this,
I am ok to accept as your research problem. Otherwise, the 1st option on The challenge of
creating culturally-significant character design in positioning Chinese animation is better.” - Research Objectives: “ Do you have specific animation to be used as the case study here?”
“You choose the specific animations - then create a case study subsequently.
Unless there is earlier research prior to you.” - Overall feedback: “good to go once you reflect on questions I have raised. Thank you!”

Below is my fourth attempt:

Fig. 1.13 Proposal 4

Feedback on Research Proposal 4:

- RMB1 billion: “sorry ...I misunderstood RMB in Malaysia RM.”

- Added paragraph for in-text citation cause there's no page number for this report and I
referred to the report's description only, not the actual content. : “noted”.

- Research 101 workshop says authors with the same last name should be cited as:
Y. Liu, & J. Liu. But Mendeley cited this way. Which should I follow?:
“ As long APA style (both works as in the actual reference list will appear the 1st name initial)”.

- Research Objectives: “refer to my comment in Proposal #3”.

- Should I add the date for retrieval for all sources? Because I saw some of our seniors did.:
“for all online references, yes.”

- No author, so I should just use the report's name?: “it all depends on which style you are
expected to adopt. In the past below is my practice using Harvard Referencing style but
now not anymore.

Anon (2017)......

APA style;
Unknown Author: If the work does not have an author, cite the source by its title in the signal
phrase or use the first word or two in the parentheses. Titles of books and reports are italicized
or underlined; titles of articles, chapters, and web pages are in quotation marks.

Note: In the rare case the "Anonymous" is used for the author, treat it as the author's name
(Anonymous, 2001). In the reference list, use the name Anonymous as the author.”

- Would like to have Dr to cross-check this reference's author citation. Authors: Faryna Mohd
Khalis, Normah Mustaffa, Mohd Nor Shahizan Ali. Googled on the citation for Malay names,
but different sources say different things: “use what has been cited.”

- I've got two sources for this book:
(1) PDF e-book but it's not an URL link (e.g. file:///C:/Users/Asus/Downloads/PDF%20
Datastream%20(3).pdf0
(2) URL link to Google Books but does not have a PDF file.

I am confused about which sources should I include, or if I even have to include any
source for this?: “go option #2”.

Below is my fifth and final work for research proposal:

Below is my first proposal:

I have revised my proposal again and below is my final submission:
