INSTRUCTIONS

Project 1

Week 2 - Week 7
In Project 1, we are to create a suitable vehicle and props design for the world that we have proposed across for character design and anatomy. The vehicle and props should communicate their functionality that reflects the world proposed. Note that for the vehicle (man-made mechanical), we are to choose 1 minimum from any of these types (land, air, water), whilst props are the components suitable to our vehicle where we will be continuously developing till your Final Project.

We would need to showcase the following items in Project 1:
  1. Moodboard and style guide
  2. Thumbnail Sketches ( 20 drawings in 2 sheets)
  3. Silhouettes (10 pieces in 1 sheet)
  4. Rough Value painting (5 chosen from the silhouettes) - 1 sheet
  5. Design breakdowns - min 1 sheet
To begin with, I started off with a Research and Development (R&D) stage about the vehicles which I would like to create. Below is some initial research I made in my moodboard.

Fig. 1.1 Initial R&D

The feedback I received was to do more research on the vehicles. Hence in the next class, I presented a more complete moodboard for my vehicles.

The feedback I received was to start sketching out silhouettes for my vehicles. Below are a few of my silhouettes. For the air vehicle, I attempted some other variety, which is to use the helicopter as a base instead of a hot air balloon.

Feedback: The silhouettes are too direct and not interesting enough. Do more research. They are too identifiable from the base shape. Hence, break the base shape. Make changes in color, texture, pattern, shape.

Vehicle Reference:
Tinkerbell, Epic, Cinderella

Style Reference:
The Legend of Korra, Avatar: The Last Airbender

Problem Solving Progression
With more referencing and research, I developed more sketches as shown below.

Fig. 1.8 Sketches

Feedback:
No.1 has some interesting elements to be extracted and refined which are the lower engines. The rest are not there yet. No.3 is too direct.

In the following lesson, I explored more types of vehicles to find one that is interesting and suits my theme, which is the pond ecosystem, well. Below are my sketches.

Fig. 1.10 Thumbnail Sketches 2.0

Feedback:
Sketches with more developing potential:
Water Vehicle: No. 3
Land Vehicle: No.12
Air Vehicle: No. 16

I took the suggestions from Mr Kannan and refined my sketches more. Below are my progression:

Land Vehicle

I also explored another alternative for the land vehicle, which is a hybrid of spider bot and lotus. Below is my progression.

With the above sketches, I progressed towards drafting out the rough line art of my three vehicles. All three vehicles below are hybrid of animals living in the pond habitat which suits my theme well. The watercraft would be a hybrid of koi fish and jet capsule.

My land vehicle would be a hybrid of a frog and Gundam robot. Below is my progression.

Meanwhile, my air vehicle would be a hybrid of a dragonfly and airplane.

Problem Solving Progression
The feedback I received is that the perspectives are off. Hence, I fixed it again. The fixing method was to create a 3D model and sketch it from there. More details can be seen in the Final Project.

Final Submission for Vehicle and Props Design Project 1

Below is my final submission for the Vehicle and Props Design Project 1 which comprises all the final outcomes in a PDF format.
