Collaborative Design Practice (Task 1)

INSTRUCTIONS

Week 1 | 1st April 2022

INTRODUCTION
Ms Lilian introduced us to Collaborative Design Practice and briefed us about this module. We began the class by introducing our best strengths and grouped with friends from different specializations. In this module, we were tasked to collaborate with an enterprise in Sabah to assist them to improve their business with our design solutions. Our collaborator is Ms Irene, the founder of DumoWongi, a Kota Kinabalu-based social enterprise that produces and sells herbs, herb salts, superfood powder, succulents, and more. To understand her enterprise better, we had an interview session with her through Zoom. After the interview session, we created a Miro board and place the information received there.

PROCESS
We conducted contextual research on different aspects of DumoWongi and below was my research:

Below are the social media of DumoWongi:

FEEDBACK
There is no feedback for this week.

NEXT COURSE OF ACTION
Compile our contextual research and start determining methods to collect data.

Week 2 | 8th April 2022

PROCESS
We showed our progression to Ms. Lilian according to our time slot chosen. Our summary for contextual research and SWOT analysis was presented accordingly. After the consultation session, we moved on and start crafting the questionnaire questions for our interview questionnaire. On the other hand, we also constantly kept in touch with Irene and scheduled an interview with her on 11th April.

Below is our interview transcript with her.

Our team also worked on crafting questionnaires for the target audience. Below is the list of questions:

FEEDBACK
The work is good and so far the most complete research among all the other groups. We can proceed to work on the rest of the tasks. The SWOT Analysis is a good attempt but can be further improvised.

NEXT COURSE OF ACTION
Creating our empathy map and personas.

Week 3 | 15th April 2022

PROCESS
We compiled the data for Irene's interview and continue to refine our questionnaire. In class, we were guided on how to share our weekly assessment with Ms Lilian and were given feedback on our progression. This week, we showed our progression for our empathy map as well.

REFLECTION

EXPERIENCE
It felt as if I am on another journey of Minor Project, really. But a more challenging one this time as we need to produce the final outcome for an existing business, instead of just prototypes. However, we managed this project more wisely as we've had prior experience collaborating with friends from different specializations. The experience for Task 1 was exciting and encouraging, as we paired up with a social enterprise with a friendly and aspiring founder, Ms Irene. Working with her was bliss, and I can't wait to see what can we offer for her business in the tasks to come in the following 10 weeks.

OBSERVATION
I observed all of my teammates are very proactive in completing their respective tasks, which forms a great team spirit in our team. Everyone is trying their best to brainstorm and discuss as much as possible so we can use design to help Irene achieve her goal of improving DumoWongi. Throughout this project, I also noticed our collaborator, Irene is a very dedicated and sincere entrepreneur. Her cause behind her business is indeed very inspiring, and I would really love to see her business grow stronger with our design solutions.

FINDINGS
Now that I have had internship experience and knew my strengths better, I know where I can contribute. Throughout these four weeks, I realized I enjoyed writing and interacting with people to understand their thoughts, so I can offer a better design solution for them. While interviewing Ms Bell, a current user of DumoWongi, her words made me reflect on my responsibility as a consumer, and how I can help to support local businesses as a mere citizen.
